Need to divide your students into groups quickly? This free random team generator accepts a class list and assigns every name to one balanced team. You can generate new teams with one click without creating student accounts.
Random Team Generator
Create balanced random teams from your class list. Each name appears once, and team sizes differ by no more than one person.
Add at least two different names to begin.
Privacy: Names stay in your browser and are not saved or sent to a student account. Close or refresh this page to clear your assignments. Avoid showing sensitive student details on a public display.
How to create random classroom teams
- Enter student names or team member names on separate lines, or separate them with commas.
- Choose between two and ten teams. The number of teams cannot exceed the number of people.
- Select Generate teams. Everyone is assigned to exactly one team.
- Use Generate teams again to reshuffle, or select Print results to print your assignments.
Ideas for teachers
Use randomized teams for group projects, classroom discussions, reading partners, STEM activities, or short review games. The generator distributes students as evenly as possible, but you can adjust the final groupings when accessibility, learning needs, or classroom dynamics require it.
For planning where students sit after grouping, use our Classroom Seating Chart Generator to shuffle student labels, swap desks and print a seating plan.
Frequently asked questions
Will each student appear only once?
Yes. Duplicate names with matching spelling are removed before shuffling. If two students share the same name, add distinguishing initials so both can be included.
Are the teams balanced?
Yes. Team sizes differ by at most one person. You can reshuffle as many times as needed.
Does it save student names?
No. The tool runs locally in your browser, and the list is not stored by the game.
Can I use numbers or group labels instead of students' names?
Yes. Enter a different label for each participant. This can help avoid showing identifiable student information on a shared display.
